Brunswick Mechanics Institute is dedicated to making space for artists to create and develop new performance work. We invite expressions of interest for two inaugural development programs in 2018:

Creative Development – providing up to 4 weeks of free creative development space and more for artists or companies to develop new work.

Resident Artists – Free and unlimited short notice space for artists and companies residing in the City of Moreland, to rehearse, make, meet, remount and create.

Expressions of interest for both programs will open and close on the same dates. Where eligible, artists are welcome to express interest for both programs.

Creative Development

Brunswick Mechanics Institute invites expressions of interest from artists and companies who wish to receive up to 4 weeks of free creative development space across 2018.  Successful projects will receive free space, access to technical equipment, expert production advice throughout their development and if desired, support to host a showing via invitation at the conclusion of the development.

Selected projects can access any of the three spaces at Mechanics and may choose to work in one intensive or across multiple blocks over 2018.

Expressions of interest will be assessed against the following criteria:

— High-quality, original concept
— Well-researched with a clear rationale
— Experimental, pushing artform boundaries, or innovating within a specific artform
— Where appropriate, considers cultural safety, environmental sustainability, access and inclusion

Mechanics is situated in the heart of Brunswick and we are passionate about supporting artists living in our community.  We look forward to developing a creative hub where professional artists feel supported to make and present exceptional and experimental work.

We invite expressions of interest from artists and companies who reside in the City of Moreland looking for free space to rehearse, remount, meet and make work.

Two Moreland Resident Artists and/or Companies will be selected across 2018 and will be given free access to unbooked space with 72-hours’ notice whenever it is available.  Resident Artists will be given unlimited access to any of our two studios or theatre. Resident Artists will have access to office space, technical equipment and tailored producing advice.

Expressions of interest will be assessed against the following criteria:

— Strong track record or (for emerging artists) commitment to professional artistic practice.
— Experimental, pushing artform boundaries, or innovating within a specific artform
— Practice that considers cultural safety, environmental sustainability, access and inclusion
— Artist or company demonstrates availability and willingness to access space at short-notice

— The City of Moreland covers the suburbs of BrunswickBrunswick EastBrunswick WestCoburgCoburg NorthFawknerGlenroyGowanbraeHadfieldOak ParkPascoe Vale, and Pascoe Vale South. Small sections of the suburbs of Fitzroy North and Tullamarine are also part of the City of Moreland. The boundary lines can be found here.

— At this time we are not accepting creative developments of visual arts work or applications from visual artists for the Resident Artists program. Please contact us if you would like to seek clarification.
